Why your iPhone saves photos as HEIC
Since iOS 11, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC (a type of HEIF file) when the camera is set to High Efficiency, which is the default. HEIC keeps a similar level of detail to JPG in a noticeably smaller file, so your phone fits more photos in the same storage.
The catch is support. Plenty of Windows PCs, older software, online application forms and print shops still expect JPG, so a HEIC file either will not open or gets rejected at upload.
How to make your iPhone take JPGs instead
If you keep hitting this, change the setting at the source. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you have already taken stay as HEIC, which is where this converter comes in.
There is a second setting that helps when copying to a computer: Settings > Photos, then under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic. Your iPhone then converts photos to a compatible format as they are transferred.
What happens to your photo when you convert
The conversion runs in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to us or anyone else. On Safari (iPhone or Mac) the browser can often read HEIC itself, so it is quickest there. Other browsers download a small decoder once, about 0.5 MB, and then work offline.
JPG uses lossy compression, so the quality slider matters. 90% is a good default: hard to tell apart from the original, at a sensible size. Drop to 75 to 80% if you need smaller files for email.
Hidden details such as the GPS location where the photo was taken are not copied into the JPG. That is useful if you are posting the photo publicly or sending it to someone you do not know.

Will converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
A little, because JPG is lossy, but at 90% quality the difference is very hard to see. Each conversion from the original HEIC is a fresh one, so there is no build-up of loss.
Why is my JPG bigger than the HEIC file?
HEIC compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same photo usually takes more space as a JPG. Lower the quality slider if the size matters.
Can I convert lots of iPhone photos at once?
