How to resize an image

1. Choose, drop or paste your images.

Dimensions and file size are different things

Dimensions are how many pixels wide and tall an image is, such as 4032 x 3024 from a typical phone camera. File size is how much storage it takes, in KB or MB. Making the dimensions smaller does shrink the file, often a lot, since halving both width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels. But if a form asks for a file under a certain number of KB, that is a size limit, and the Resize image to KB tool is built for exactly that.

Use this tool when something asks for pixels: a website banner, a profile picture, a marketplace listing or an image that must be at least or at most a certain width.

Keeping the aspect ratio

With the lock on, type a width and the height is worked out for you, so the image keeps its shape. For example, a 4000 x 3000 photo resized to 1200 wide becomes 1200 x 900.

If you need an exact shape that differs from your photo, such as a square from a landscape photo, turning the lock off will stretch or squash it. Crop first to the shape you want, then resize.

Making images bigger

You can enlarge an image, but it cannot gain detail it never had. Scaling a 400 pixel wide image up to 2000 pixels makes it softer and blurrier, not sharper. If you need a large version, start from the biggest original you can find.

Resizing happens in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded. Hidden metadata such as location is not copied into the resized files.
