Why photos often need to become a PDF
A lot of paperwork now gets done with a phone camera. You photograph a payslip, a tenancy agreement, a signed form or proof of address, and then the landlord, employer or council asks for it as a PDF. Many upload portals accept PDF but not HEIC, and a single PDF is far easier for the other person to read and file than a batch of separate photos.

A4 or fit to photo: which to pick
- A4: each photo is scaled to sit on a standard A4 page. Pick this if the PDF might be printed, or if it is going to an office, solicitor or agency that expects normal pages.
- Fit to photo: each page is exactly the shape of the photo, with no white border. Pick this for viewing on screen, or when the photos are pictures rather than documents.
If the PDF turns out too large for an email or upload limit, compress the photos first or try fewer pages per file.
Tips for photographing documents
Lay the page flat in good, even light and hold the phone directly above it so the text is square. Fill the frame with the page, and check each shot is sharp before moving on. A crooked or blurry photo in a PDF is still crooked or blurry.
Everything is processed in your browser, so private documents are never uploaded. Safari on iPhone and Mac decodes HEIC directly. Other browsers download a small decoder (about 0.5 MB) once. The GPS location stored in your photos is not copied into the PDF.
