Why so many downloaded images are WebP
WebP is an image format developed by Google that gives smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. Many websites serve their images as WebP so pages load faster. When you right-click and save an image, that is often what you end up with, even if the page looked like it was showing a normal photo.
Browsers handle WebP fine. The trouble starts afterwards: some photo editors, older versions of Office, printing kiosks, online shops and upload forms do not accept it. JPG works almost everywhere, which is why converting is the quick fix.
What changes when you convert
JPG has no transparency. If your WebP has a transparent background, such as a logo or product cut-out, the transparent areas become white in the JPG. If you need to keep the transparency, a PNG is the right format instead.
JPG is also lossy, so pick a quality that suits the job. Around 90% keeps the image looking the same. Lower values shrink the file further, which helps with email and upload limits. Converting cannot add detail that was not in the WebP to begin with, so a small web image stays small.

The conversion happens in your browser and your images are never uploaded. You can convert a whole folder of saved images at once and download them as a ZIP. Any hidden metadata, including location if the image had any, is not copied into the JPGs.
