    Why PNG photos are so large

    PNG is lossless. It stores every pixel exactly, which is perfect for logos, diagrams and screenshots with sharp edges, but it is a poor fit for photos. The fine, random detail in a photo does not compress well without loss, so a photo saved as PNG can be many times the size of the same photo as JPG.

    JPG was designed for photos. It throws away detail your eye is unlikely to notice, and the result is a much smaller file. For a photo that someone has saved as PNG, converting to JPG often shrinks it dramatically with no visible difference.

    Transparency and text: two things to check

    • Transparency: JPG cannot store it. Any transparent areas in your PNG, such as the background of a logo, become white.
    • Screenshots and text: JPG compression can leave faint smudges around sharp edges and lettering. A screenshot of a document or a chart often looks crisper as PNG, and may not shrink much as JPG anyway.

    A good rule: photos go to JPG, while graphics with flat colours, sharp text or transparency stay PNG.

    Choosing a quality setting

    The quality slider trades file size against detail. 90% looks like the original to most people. 75 to 80% gives noticeably smaller files and suits email and web use. Below about 60% you may start to see blockiness in smooth areas like skies.

    Each file shows its original and new size, so you can see the saving straight away and try again if needed. The conversion runs in your browser, your images are never uploaded, and hidden metadata such as location is not copied across.

    Questions people ask

    Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?

    Slightly, because JPG is lossy. At high quality settings the difference is very hard to see in photos, though sharp text can show faint artefacts.

    Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?

    This can happen with simple graphics or screenshots that PNG already compresses well. Those images are usually better left as PNG.

    What happens to a transparent background?

    It becomes white, because JPG has no transparency.

    Can I convert many PNGs at once?
