How to crop an image

  1. Choose, drop or paste your image.
  2. Pick a shape: Free, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 3:2 or 35x45 mm.
  3. Drag the crop box and its corners into place.
  4. Download the cropped image in its original format.

What each shape is for

  • Free: any shape you like, for cutting out clutter or a stray thumb at the edge.
  • 1:1 square: profile pictures, avatars and product shots on marketplaces.
  • 4:5 portrait: a popular shape for Instagram and other social feeds, as it takes up more of the screen than a square.
  • 16:9 widescreen: YouTube thumbnails, presentation slides, website banners and TV or monitor wallpapers.
  • 3:2: the natural shape of many camera photos and of standard 6 x 4 inch prints.
  • 35x45 mm: the shape of a UK passport photo.

About the passport photo shape

The 35x45 mm option gives you the right proportions. It does not check the other passport photo rules, such as the plain light background, head size, lighting, expression and no shadows. Those are set by HM Passport Office, so read the current guidance on GOV.UK before you submit. If you apply online, the service checks your photo when you upload it.

Cropping, resizing and quality

Cropping removes the outside of the image. It does not scale what is left, so a tight crop of a small area gives a small image with fewer pixels. Crop from the largest original you have, particularly for printing. If you then need exact pixel dimensions, use the resize tool after cropping.

Your cropped image comes out in the same format you put in, so a PNG with transparency stays a PNG. Cropping happens in your browser and your image is never uploaded. Hidden metadata such as location is not copied into the cropped file.

Questions people ask

What size is a 4:5 image?

Any image whose width is four fifths of its height, such as 1080 x 1350 pixels. It is a common portrait shape for social media posts.

Can this make a passport photo?

It crops to the 35x45 mm passport shape, but it does not check the other photo rules. See GOV.UK for the full requirements.

Does cropping reduce quality?

Cropping itself removes pixels rather than degrading the rest. The image just ends up with fewer pixels, which matters if you enlarge or print it.

How do I crop a photo into a square?

Choose 1:1, then drag the square over the part you want to keep and download.

Will my PNG keep its transparent background?

Yes. The output keeps the original format, so transparency in a PNG is kept.
